Hi Reader,

Ways to buy less

One of the most impactful ways to make a difference (aside from recycling properly 😊) is by shopping second-hand. Lately, I’ve been exploring local second-hand stores and was pleasantly surprised by what I’ve discovered.

I recently stopped by a small, well-organized second-hand store close to home and found much more than just clothes and kitchenware. There were drawers filled with fabric, thread, lace, knitting needles, and sewing patterns. On top of that, they had an entire section for hardware, tools, screws and nails, and even plumbing supplies!

My advice? Take some time to visit the second-hand stores near you and see what they offer. Whether you make a mental note or jot down a list, knowing where to find specific items can be incredibly useful the next time you need something.

The best part is that by shopping second-hand, you’re not only embracing a key principle of the circular economy—keeping items in use for as long as possible—but also supporting local stores and their associated charities and saving money.

Recycling Plastic

I recently presented at a nearby Rotary Club, focusing on how to recycle plastics. These were my top tips:

  • Find your local information and follow the rules
  • Remember, most curbside recycling programs only accept packaging items
  • Leave soft plastics out of your curbside bin
  • Keep things loose, and don't bag them
  • Ensure containers are empty and clean (and don't forget to dispose of hazardous chemicals appropriately)
  • Stop putting things in your recycling bin that you wish could be recycled, and find specialist recycling services available to you.

Shrinking your soft plastics!

Recently, my dad was so excited to tell me about all the recycling he is doing. He even bought himself a Shrinker! 3.0 from Wholly Shrink! to collect his soft plastics. It's a device that helps you compact your soft plastics so you can collect and store them more easily. You can read my full review here.

My own Shrinker! 3.0 sits proudly on my kitchen bench, and I use it daily.
